Skin Care Houston Offers Unique Challenges

Living near the Gulf of Mexico in south Texas, Houston offers some of the most humid hot weather in the state. When considering skin care, Houston offers some unique opportunities as the skin can become dried out from the sun as well as wrongly moisturized by the salt water in the air.

The best way to insure good skin, of course is by taking care of it and that includes making sure it is properly protected from the sun. Most dermatologists recommend wearing sunscreen with a rating of at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor). When thinking about skin care, Houston’s sun can be hot and for periods of extended exposure a sun block may be in order. A sunscreen helps the skin absorb the harmful rays while a sun block keeps them from reaching the skin.

While sunblock is recommended for extended exposure as well as for outdoor activities such as swimming or fishing in the Gulf, it can leave a white residue on the skin. A sunscreen is more readily absorbed into the skin and for skin care, Houston additional applications may be needed if it gets washed off while exposed to water.

Keep Skin Moist To Avoid Dryness

Keeping your skin hydrated is a major part of skin care, Houston and drinking plenty of water can help. A minimum of eight glasses a day is recommended but caffeine and alcohol should be avoided, as they tend to dry your skin out. While being out in extreme heat the water will also help your body stay hydrated, your skin may eed some extra help by way of moisturizing creams and lotions.

Be certain to choose the types that are oil-free or water-based to prevent them from clogging the pores in your skin. This can cause breakouts of heat rashes or even exacerbate acne breakouts in those prone to acne. When dealing with skin care, Houston the weather can be a factor for several skin irritations and the proper steps are required to prevent them from occurring.

For those who spend a lot of time on the water, sunburn can be a threat to the health of your skin and maintaining a protective layer of sunblock will help. Remember, the sunblock formulas do not double with the SPF number. For example, an SPF 30 does not provide twice the protection of SPF 15. The SPF-15 may absorb 90 percent of the ultraviolet rays while a rating of SPF-30 may absorb only 97 percent.
