Is Stomach Liposuction Effective?

Stomach liposuction is the most commonly performed type of liposuction. This procedure not only reduces fats in the abdomen, it also improves the muscles in your abs. Usually mistaken for a tummy tuck procedure, stomach liposuction is performed in the same method as the traditional liposuction, using the same tools and medications.

Stomach liposuction can effectively reduce abdominal fat deposits. However, recovery time may be longer than tummy tucks because swelling usually occurs after the procedure.

Abdominal fat can be located under your skin (subcutaneous) or internally near your intestinal loops (intra-abdominal). A stomach liposuction works by removing the subcutaneous abdominal fat. Since fat deposits from your abdomen can be resistant to exercise or diet, surgery can help in getting rid of those unwanted fat.

A typical stomach liposuction could take around one to two hours. Patients with small areas to be treated can be performed as an outpatient basis, either in an outpatient surgery clinic or at the surgeon’s facility. These kinds of procedures are usually performed under local anesthesia with only mild sedation.

However, for patients who require several stomach liposuction procedures, it is recommended to stay overnight at the hospital for surveillance. These procedures usually include general anesthesia or local anesthesia with deep sedation.

Recovery Period and Stomach Liposuction Results

After the procedure, most patients will experience swelling and bruising, which should subside within two weeks. In order to boost your healing process, the surgeon will probably recommend you to perform mild activities.

Virtually all stomach liposuction patients are able to return to normal daily living within a few days. However, it is important to avoid strenuous and intense activities to allow your body to heal completely. The surgeon will probably provide you with a compression garment, which should be worn as long as your doctor deems necessary.

Results can be visible around two to three weeks after surgery. However, the full effects of stomach liposuction will only show after several months or a year. While majority of stomach liposuction patients are pleased with the results, some are unhappy due to loss of muscle tone or an altered skin quality.

Through stomach liposuction, fat cells are removed permanently. Because of this, it will not regain the unwanted extra weight in that particular area. Be aware, however, that stomach liposuction does not guarantee weight gain in various areas of your body. In addition, it is important that you consult with a doctor to provide you with a nutritional plan and exercise program after the liposuction procedure.
