The Basics of Burning Incense

Incense has been used for many centuries and by many cultures for its aromatic, spiritual and healing qualities. Today, this product is still used in a variety of environments and for many different purposes. If you have never tried burning incense, you will find that it is a relatively easy product to use to scent your room, and bring relaxation or energy, depending on the type of fragrance used. There are a few basics that you need to know about this aromatic product before you begin using it in your home.

Safety First

At the risk of stating the obvious, it must first be pointed out that burning incense means dealing with fire, and certain precautions must be taken. The safest way to burn incense is with the proper burner, and this will vary depending on whether you are burning sticks, cones or cylinders. When in doubt, it is best to ask someone at the store in which you are purchasing your incense and supplies, to ensure that you end up with the safest products for your own preferred use. Once you have purchased your burner, placement of the piece is also important for safety and maximum benefit. Do not place a burner where it can be easily knocked over, or where items are hanging above that could become damaged or even catch fire.

Keep in mind that an incense burner can become quite hot, so never set your burner directly on wood or other flammable surfaces. The best choice for holding your burner is a ceramic tile or an ashtray that is designed to take the heat. Do not burn incense in or underneath a cupboard, and keep away from pets and children at all times. With proper care and caution, your incense can become a delightful, aromatic addition to your home that offers a positive environment for relaxation, meditation or even sleep, depending on the scents that you select. Most people that begin using incense at home find that they enjoy it so much; they will accumulate a collection of fragrances in a fairly short period of time. Another popular item to collect is the burner, and some will have burners from all over the world.

Give it a Try

If you would like to try your hand at this hobby, you don’t need to begin with much besides a few sticks or cones in the fragrance of your choice and the appropriate burner. Light the incense with a match or lighter, and hold the flame at the stick for ten seconds. The flame should put itself out within a few seconds or so, leaving the incense to smolder and burn down to ashes as it releases its aromatic flavor throughout the room.
